The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford
At the Princess Royal Hospital, the Anaesthetic Department currently provides cover to:
- Two theatre areas; The main theatres (theatres 1 to 5) and Day Case theatres (theatres 6, 7 and 8). Theatre 8 is utilised for Regional or Local procedures.
- An Obstetric Theatre and Obstetric Unit.
- An Intensive Care Unit, currently staffed (in and out of hours) medically by Anaesthetists / Intensivists
- A Paediatric Ward with Paediatric Resuscitation area
- An Emergency Department with Resuscitation area
- A Consultant led Acute Pain service
- A Consultant led Chronic Pain service
- General Wards – Medical (inc. Cardiology), Orthopaedic, ENT / Maxillofacial and Gynaecology
- A Radiology department
Elective activity at PRH includes the following:
- Pre-operative Assessment
- Paediatric Surgery
- Obstetrics
- ENT Surgery
- Maxillofacial Surgery
- Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Trauma
- Gynaecological Surgery
- Breast Surgery
- Day Case Surgery (including General surgical specialties)
- Community Dentals
- Providing support to nursing staff providing conscious sedation for patients undergoing procedures in theatre
- Providing support for recovery staff to ensure that patients return safely to an appropriate post-operative area
- Post-operative Assessment of patients (including acute pain management)
- Education and support to Anaesthetists undergoing basic and advanced training
Emergency activity includes:

- Maxillofacial Surgery
- Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Trauma
- Gynaecology
- General Surgical specialties where the need arises
The Anaesthetic service provides 24 hour/seven day cover for emergency activity in theatre, on the Intensive Care Unit and in the Obstetric Unit, with resident middle grade cover for theatre, ITU and Obstetric Units.
A Consultant on call rota operates to provide 24 hour senior advice and assistance.
