Teledermatology
Teledermatology is based at both Hollinswood House (the Community Diagnostic Centre in Telford) and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Clinic 3, and it enables faster diagnosis and treatment for skin cancer. At Hollinswood House, it operates 4 days a week; at RSH it currently operates 1 day a week.
The service is run by The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) and involves a clinical photographer taking a series of digital photographs of a patient’s skin lesion. The photographs are remotely reviewed by a dermatologist to assess if the patient needs to come into hospital for further treatment, or whether they can be discharged.
GPs can refer their patients directly to the service and it ensures patients can have quicker appointments for the photographs to be taken; remote triaging enables dermatologists to review twice as many patients than during face-to-face appointments, which leads to a quicker outcome for the patient, who can receive their results within two weeks, rather than waiting to be seen in person at hospital.
Many patients with non-cancerous lesions can be discharged back to the care of their GPs without them needing a clinic appointment.
The teledermatology service is currently operating from with Hollinswood House, 4 days a week and is supported by a medical photographer, teledermatology support workers and teledermatology admin assistance.
