A previously unloved space has been redeveloped using SaTH Charitable Funds in a space behind Ward 32/Fracture Clinic at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
The redevelopment came from a request from the End of Life Care Team after a patient on Ward 32 expressed a wish to go outside for a final time to feel the sun on his face and it was agreed to improve this space for future inpatients to access and for colleagues on Ward 32 and Fracture Clinic.
The Lavender Garden now contains raised flower beds, a pod with light and heating for staff to take breaks, outdoor seating, and room to wheel out patients beds down a sturdy ramp. There is also a rainbow mosaic on the freshly painted border of the pebbledash walls, which was made and donated by Shropshire Girl Guides to thank NHS staff for their care.
Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation said “We are grateful to the end of life care team for thinking about how this space could be improved and contacting SaTH Charity for help. We’ve worked with ward staff on the design and it’s a great example of teams working together to improve the experience of patients and colleagues, and a great use of charitable funds.”
