The following message is from our colleagues at Shropshire Council

Shropshire Council’s public health team are encouraging people to sign up for Dry January and start 2017 in a state of booze-free bliss.

After the heady excess of the festive season, January is the best time to give your body a little break. And it’s super simple to do – just swap your alcoholic drinks for something softer in January to experience some amazing health (and wealth) benefits.

The campaign, organised by Alcohol Concern, aims to show people the benefits of cutting down on their alcohol intake, whilst raising money for the charity which is dedicated to tackling the harm caused by alcohol to individuals, families and society. The charity wants as many people as possible to sign up for the challenge this January. It’s an opportunity to raise money for Alcohol Concern by asking friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you. There is plenty of help and support available online to help you enjoy your ‘booze free’ month.

Karen Calder, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, and Chair of Shropshire’s Health and Well-being Board, said: “Giving up alcohol is probably not the first thing on people’s mind at this time of year. If you do have a spare moment during the busy festive season, you may want to consider taking some time out in the New Year and give the booze a miss for a month.

“Dry January is the perfect opportunity to take a break from alcohol and feel the benefit, especially if you’ve over-indulged over the festive season.

“As well as receiving admiration from of your friends and family, cutting out alcohol can also help you to lose weight, sleep better, feel more energetic and have clearer skin. You’re even likely to save quite a few pounds along the way. So taking part in the campaign may also help you with your other New Year’s resolutions too.”
