A new electronic way of tracking patients through their journey in the surgical assessment unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) has been successfully launched.

The senior nursing team at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), which runs Shropshire’s two acute hospitals, has worked in collaboration with the Trust’s digital team to create a bespoke digital system to track patients through the department.

The surgical assessment team receives referrals from multiple sources, such as GPs, community nurses and the emergency department. They then have responsibilities to see the patients within a certain time and to monitor certain elements of their condition, all of which the new whiteboard helps to track.

The system replaces a manual process and has been praised by the team for enhancing the care delivered to the patients in the unit.

Kelly Tootill, Ward Manager of the Surgical Assessment Unit, said: “The SAU whiteboard has been warmly welcomed in the surgical assessment area.

“Both nurses and doctors have reported significant improvements in workflow, with the new system greatly enhancing efficiency.

“It has proven to be a valuable tool for our coordinators, saving time and enabling doctors to review patients in a more structured and organised way.

“Most importantly, this system is directly benefiting our patients, as it allows nurses and doctors to allocate more time to provide essential care.”
