A cancer support worker at the Trust, which runs the county’s acute hospitals, has put her best foot forward and completed a 74-mile walk to raise money for the charity Shrewsbury Men’s Shed.

After volunteering with the charity, Katey Evans, a Personalised Cancer Care Navigator at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), decided to raise money by walking the north route of the Shropshire Way.

The Shrewsbury Men’s Shed works closely with SaTH and the Personalised Cancer Care team, which supports people affected by cancer. It provides a much-needed space to hold the Shrewsbury Men Like Us support group for any man affected by cancer to connect, talk and get involved in the many projects they run to support the community.

A horticultural therapy course, which is open to anybody affected by cancer and is funded by Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, also takes place at the Shed.

When Katey first visited the Shed 18 months ago, she met one of the ‘shedders’ and he shared openly and honestly how the Shed had supported him when he was at his lowest.

The money raised will help to fund an adjacent stable block. This will add a hobbies, crafts, art and pottery space, storage, shot blasting and paint spray booth as well as a larger metalwork/engineering and fabrication area.

During the walk Katey faced some problems due to rain and flooding but that didn’t stop her completing the challenge.

Katey said: “I’m really grateful for the support and donations I have received. Thank you to everyone who has supported me.”

To date she has raised £1,400 for Shrewsbury Men’s Shed. If you would like to donate, please see her JustGiving page. If you would like to support the charity, please visit their website or email community@shrewsburymensshed.co.uk or call 07400 726910.
