Construction at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

A new four-storey building is being constructed at the front of RSH, which will improve care for everyone through more modern healthcare facilities. If you are visiting RSH soon, please be aware there are changes to how you access and travel around the site. You can find out more about what to expect when visiting and find the best place to park here.

We have begun construction works at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with our contractors, Integrated Healthcare Projects (IHP). IHP, are members of the Considerate Constructors Scheme which seeks to respect communities impacted by building work. A significant amount of earth has been removed and our site transformed, as we clear the way for the new building near the old Outpatients Entrance. We are continuing to work with patients and volunteers as we support people to navigate their way through the changes. We expect construction to be complete in 2028.

We recognise that during these development works we will need to work differently, and we are committed to minimising the impact on our neighbours, patients and staff as much as possible. In addition to the HTP works, there are other construction works taking place to improve site wide infrastructure at RSH. Long-term we know that these vital works will improve care for all our communities and whilst these works have commenced, we thank you for your patience and understanding.

You can watch a video tour of the new healthcare facilities here.

The HTP plans will see a remodelling and expansion of healthcare facilities at RSH to provide:

  • Improved emergency department and emergency care facilities

  • Protected ambulance canopy

  • Modern maternity facilities

  • A new critical care unit

  • A new hospital entrance with enhanced patient drop-off facilities, reception facilities and hospitality offer

CGI of new healthcare facilities at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

The development and construction at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, as part of the Hospitals Transformation Programme, will help us transform acute hospital services for communities. To achieve this, it is vital that we invest and upgrade our facilities to support modern healthcare practices.

The development will see the construction of the new four-storey building near the former Outpatients’ entrance, and the remodelling of the existing Emergency Department at RSH. The building will provide new emergency care, women and children’s and critical care facilities. The Trust’s clinically-led designs will include; modern fit for purpose internal healthcare spaces; external balconies; an internal atrium and single ensuite bedrooms.

When will works be complete?

It is expected that the new building at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital will be completed and operational in 2028.
