A key milestone has been reached with the plans to improve hospital care for our communities.

Signing the contract with Integrated Health Projects (IHP) for the design and build of a modern four-storey building at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) is a major step forward and puts us on the pathway to transforming our health services.

VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine are involved in the joint venture to construct the building.

This marks a key milestone for the county’s largest investment in hospital services, as part of the Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP). It is expected that the new building will be completed and operational in 2028.

Our clinicians have developed and supported the HTP plans and it will see the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) site in Telford specialise in planned care and the RSH site specialise in emergency care.

Enabling works and site preparations are currently underway at the RSH site near the former Outpatients’ entrance alongside the remodelling of the existing Emergency Department at RSH.

The building will provide new emergency care, women and children’s and critical care facilities.

To get a glimpse of what you can expect as part of the new healthcare facilities, you can watch this short preview video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TNqSuHBFrE

We will continue to keep our local communities involved at every stage of the development, to help build a positive experience for everyone.

Throughout the construction, existing services will be maintained and careful consideration and planning has been undertaken to reposition entrances and car parking. The construction of the building is being carried out in phases to help minimise the impact to staff, patients, visitors, and local communities.

If you are visiting RSH soon, please check our website before attending, to find which entrance and car parking facilities are best for you: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital – SaTH

The Maternity Services open day will take place this Saturday (28 September 2024), 10am-3pm at the Shropshire Women and Children’s Centre, part of the PRH.

Throughout the day, there will be hourly guided tours through our Antenatal Ward, Delivery Suite, Midwife Led Unit and Postnatal Ward, offering an opportunity to meet maternity services teams, ask questions and watch simulation training.

Alongside this, there will be information stalls on areas including antenatal and postnatal care, labour and birth. Our teams will be joined by the Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP) Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin, who will be on hand to provide support and information for those interested in getting involved with shaping maternity services here at SaTH.

Those interested in attending the event can turn up on the day. For more details please visit: https://www.sath.nhs.uk/news/maternity-services-open-day-announced/

There is still time to apply for the next cohort of the Trust’s Maternity Volunteer to Career (VtC) Programme with closing date for applications on Monday 30 September 2024.

It is a great opportunity for people to gain experience in maternity and attend training sessions with clinical leads to develop their skills and knowledge. You do not need previous experience or qualifications to apply.

As well as volunteering within a clinical setting, the group will have a number of evening masterclasses, including interview preparation, a communication workshop, simulated training and 1:1 career conversations.

If you are interested in joining the programme and reading success stories from previous volunteers, visit our website: www.sath.nhs.uk/working-with-us/volunteering/volunteer-to-career-programme.
