Types of Appointment
It is useful to bring along a relative or friend, so they can learn about your hearing loss and how to help. Depending on your results, one of the following things will happen:
- If appropriate we will discuss the option of having a hearing aid(s). A further appointment will be arranged for the fitting.
- If appropriate a hearing aid(s) may be fitted at the same appointment. Advice on use and maintenance of the hearing aid will also be discussed.
- If tests indicate a hearing aid may not be of help, or you choose not to proceed, we will discuss alternative options to help you.
- If you already have a hearing aid(s) we will take the necessary steps to ensure they are maintained and adjusted to suit your needs.
Please fill in the questionnaires provided with your appointment letter and bring them with you. Make sure that you have not been exposed to any loud noises at least 24 hours before. If you need a hearing test, the results may be affected.
At this appointment the Audiologist will set the hearing aids up using the computer, explain how the hearing aids work and how to get used to them. It is sometimes very useful for you to bring along your partner, relative or friend, so that they can learn more about your hearing loss and how they can support you. .
It is our normal practice that anyone issued with a hearing aid is given support by our colleagues at the Sight and Hearing Loss Service and the Sensory Impairment Team. If you do not wish us to share details with our colleagues, please let the audiologist know.
We hope that you are wearing your new aid and are finding it useful. We can offer you a follow up appointment to make sure that you are getting the best from your hearing aid and to reinforce some important details about maintenance.
This appointment may take 30-45 minutes.
A fine tune appointment is useful if your hearing aid(s) need adjusting.
This appointment will last approximately 15 to 30 minutes.
For all appointments, it is important that your ears are clear of wax. If your ears have not been checked recently, please see your GP or practice nurse. Please bring your appointment letter with you.
For hearing aid repairs, servicing and maintenance, we also offer the following options:
- Post your hearing aids to the audiology department. Please weigh them at the post office to ensure correct postage and label them with your name, address, date of birth and the problem. Once the aid(s) have been serviced or repaired, we will return them by first class post.
- Drop your hearing aids off at either Royal Shrewsbury Hospital or Princess Royal Hospital audiology department with your details including, name, address and date of birth. We will contact you when they are ready to collect.
