In March 2020 we announced the fantastic news that we had successfully secured Digital Aspirant funding to implement an EPR Programme. The Programme will be delivered in phases, introducing changes to delivery and management of care services across the hospital sites, supported by new digital systems.

As set-out in our digital strategy the focus will be meeting our strategic priorities and the requirements set by NHS England.

This enables providers of care to measure IT adoption and maturity within their organisations.

Our programme of work puts in place the core foundations that will enable us to provide effective and safe care, while allowing us to maximise transformational and innovative opportunities in the coming years.

What is an EPR?

An EPR is an approach where paper based patient records are digitised and clinical systems architecture rationalised. This may be through a single integrated approach, or through the adoption of integration and interfacing.

At SaTH our Digital Transformation Programme includes in the implementation of an EPR, based on the CareFlow suite of products provided by System C.

Why are we bringing in an EPR?

The introduction of EPR will support us in transforming how we work every day, helping us to be safer and more efficient, make better clinical decisions and run our services with the information we need at our finger-tips. It will also help us to deliver care in a different way, according to best practice, efficiently and consistently. We already store many of our patient records on computerised systems, as well as on paper.  We want to bring all of this information together into one place so that we have access to it when we need it.

What are the systems involved in the EPR Programme?

Through phase one of the programme we have introduced a number of systems such as CareFlow PAS and ED, Badgernet Maternity, Bluespier Theatres, and ICNET.

Phase two will consist of the implementation of additional functionality such as electronic prescribing and medicines management (ePMA), digital order comms results and reporting, CareFlow Connect and a Patient Engagement Portal. The programme of work stretches over a number of years.
