Mr Mark Cheetham MBBS BSc (Hons) MSc MD FRCS (Gen Surg) Cert Med Ed

Mr Mark Cheetham is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) having completed higher surgical training in the North West Thames Deanery. In addition to a practise in general, emergency and laparoscopic colorectal surgery including colorectal cancer he has a specialist interest in complex inflammatory bowel disease and anal fistula.

He completed a specialist colorectal Fellowship at St. Mark’s Hospital, London and carried out research (which lead to the award of MD) into anorectal physiology and proctology resulting in several publications related to haemorrhoids, anal fissure and faecal incontinence.

In academic practice, Mr Cheetham is a peer reviewer for the British Journal of Surgery, Colorectal Disease and the World Journal of Surgery (for which he is also a member of the editorial board). He is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and the International Surgical Society. He is a co-editor of “Schein’s Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery 5^th Edition”.

Mr Cheetham is a Clinical Supervisor for Foundation Doctors, Core Trainees and Specialty Trainees at SaTH. He holds a Certificate of Medical Education.

Mr Cheetham is heavily involved in medical leadership, quality improvement and patient safety and is currently the National Lead for general surgery in the Getting it Right First Time programme at NHS Improvement. He was previously Divisional Medical Director for Surgery, Anaesthetics and Cancer at SaTH from 2013 to 2022. He was awarded a Generation Q Fellowship from the Health Foundation in 2015 and completed a Masters in Leadership and Quality improvement at Ashridge Business School in 2016. He is an affiliate at the Centre for Health and Care Leadership at the University of Birmingham.

Mr Robert Clarke MBBS BSc (Hons) FRCS (Gen Surg)

Mr Robert Clarke is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) having graduated from St Mary’s Hospital (Imperial College, London) and completing higher surgical training in the Wessex Deanery with senior training at one of the National Colorectal Training Units at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. He has a specialist interest in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery including rectal cancer, Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS) for early rectal cancers, laparoscopic ileo-pouch anal procedures for inflammatory bowel disease and pilonidal sinus disease with flap reconstruction. He also has a general, emergency and colorectal surgery practice including the management of proctology including haemorrhoids, fistulas and anal fissure and laparoscopic hernia repairs.

He undertook a specialist laparoscopic colorectal Fellowship at a National Colorectal Training Unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary in 2010-11where he became a trainer for National Laparoscopic Colorectal Training Programme (LAPCO). Mr Clarke was a member of Faculty for the Laparoscopic Hernia Masterclass and Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery Immersion courses while in Bradford and continues his educational practice in laparoscopic training for advanced surgical trainees.

He is a current Link Consultant for the RCS England approved Senior Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Colorectal Surgery and a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for Foundation Doctors, Core Trainees and Specialty Trainees at SaTH.

He is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

Mr Clarke is Clinical Lead for Enhanced Recovery after Surgery at SaTH.

Mr Adam Farquharson  MBChB MEd MFST(Ed) FRCS (Gen Surg)

Mr Adam Farquharson is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) having graduated from the University of Sheffield and completing higher surgical training in the Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery. He has a specialist interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, pelvic floor dysfunction (including faecal incontinence. obstructive defecation syndrome and rectal prolapse) and complex anal fistulas. He also has a general, emergency and colorectal cancer surgery practice including the management of proctology including haemorrhoids and anal fissure. He is a core member of the Pelvic Floor multidisciplinary team.

He undertook a specialist laparoscopic colorectal Fellowship at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney, Australia (2012-13) and was awarded the Ethicon Endo-Surgery David Dunn Memorial travelling fellowship to support this period of specialist laparoscopic colorectal training.

Before higher surgical training, Mr Farquharson was clinical research fellow to the Peritoneal Tumour service at The Christie Hospital, Manchester. This research focussed on peritoneal surface malignancies including pseudomyxoma peritonei and their management with cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy) leading to publications in the British Journal of Cancer and Colorectal Disease. He was also granted travelling fellowships by the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Coloproctology for this and other work undertaken in Sheffield.

Mr Farquharson is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, The Pelvic Floor Society and the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the RCS Edinburgh. He is a peer reviewer for the journal Colorectal Disease.

In the later stages of training he completed a postgraduate degree in education at the University of Sheffield (Masters of Education) with his thesis examining the video assessment of surgical skills. He is a Clinical and Educational Supervisor for Core Trainees and Specialty Trainees at SaTH and is member of faculty for Non-Operative Surgical Skills (NOTSS) at the ICENI Centre for surgical training in Colchester.

Mr Farquharson is the current Training Programme Director – Professional Development at Health Education England (WM).

He is Clinical Director for Gastrointestinal Surgery at SaTH.

Ms Emma Hamilton MBChB BSc MD FRCS (Gen Surg)

Ms Emma Hamilton is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) having graduated from St Andrews and Manchester Medical Schools and completed higher surgical training in the West Midlands Deanery. She has a specialist interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and colorectal cancer. She also has a general, emergency and colorectal surgery practice with the management of proctology including haemorrhoids and anal fissure.

She was awarded the national Ethicon Endo-Surgery Fellowship to support a six-month specialist laparoscopic colorectal fellowship at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham in 2016.

Prior to higher surgical training she undertook two years of research at the Institute for Cancer Studies at the University of Birmingham, for which she holds an MD after submission of her thesis examining the immune response in colorectal cancer.  She has been a member of the West Midlands Research Collaborative and DREAMS trial management group.

Ms Hamilton is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

From an educational perspective she is Clinical and Educational Supervisor to Foundation Doctors and Educational Supervisor for Foundation Year, Core Training and Specialty Trainees in Surgery and for Advanced Care Practitioners.

Mr Jon Lacy-Colson  MBChB MD FRCS (Gen Surg)

Mr Jon Lacy-Colson is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) having completed higher surgical training in the West Midlands Deanery. He has a specialist interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, colorectal cancer and pelvic floor dysfunction (including faecal incontinence. obstructive defecation syndrome and rectal prolapse). He completed a specialist colorectal Fellowship at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia in 2009-2010.

Jon holds an MD with his thesis examining the genetics of colorectal cancer. His academic interests include the early diagnosis and screening for colorectal cancer and pelvic floor disorders. He is a Clinical Trials Scholar with the West Midlands Research Collaborative.

Mr Lacy-Colson is a member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and The Pelvic Floor Society.

In education he is a past Tutor in Surgery at Keele University Medical School and continues to act as an examiner for medical school undergraduate finals examinations. He is also a current Clinical and Educational Supervisor for Foundation Doctors, Core Trainees and Speciality Trainees at SaTH.

Mr Lacy-Colson is Lead Clinician for the Pelvic Floor multidisciplinary team and Lead Clinician for surgical mortality and morbidity review at SaTH. He has also served as Clinical Director for Patient Safety and Clinical Governance at SaTH.

Ms Kirsten McArdle     BSc MBChB MSc FRCS (Gen Surg)

Ms Kirsten McArdle is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust having graduated from St Andrews and Manchester Medical Schools and completed higher surgical training in the West Midlands Deanery.  She has a specialist interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and colorectal cancer. She also has a general, emergency and colorectal surgery practice, including proctology and the management of haemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulae.

Ms McArdle has a special interest in patient safety and quality and service improvement and holds a Masters degree in Medical Leadership from Warwick University having undertaken a thesis on the effects of service reconfiguration on emergency services.

She is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.

From an educational perspective she is Clinical Supervisor to Foundation Doctors and Educational Supervisor for Advanced Care Practitioners.

Ms McArdle is Lead Clinician for Emergency Surgery and Link Clinician for the Hospital Transformation Project (HTP) at SaTH.

Mr Joe McCloud       MBChB MD FRCS (Gen Surg)

Mr Joe McCloud is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) having completed higher surgical training in the Trent Deanery. He has a specialist interest in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery including Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEMS) for rectal polyps and early rectal cancers, complex inflammatory bowel disease and complex endometriosis. He also has a general, emergency and colorectal surgery practice including the management of proctology including haemorrhoids, fistulas and anal fissure.

He undertook specialist laparoscopic colorectal Fellowship at one of the National Colorectal Training Units at Colchester Hospital.

He holds a MD by the University of Sheffield for a thesis on molecular biology in colorectal cancer.

Mr McCloud has 5 years’ experience in medical management as Clinical Director for surgery and also has experience both locally and regionally in the delivery of postgraduate education. He has been involved in the delivery of advanced laparoscopic training on a number of national courses. 

Over the past 5 years or so he has developed an interest in patient safety and human factors and has received and then delivered training in this to staff groups and also to regional surgery trainees. He is currently engaged on a Postgraduate Certificate in Patient Safety at the University of Oxford and has recently been appointed as the Trust Clinical Lead for Human Factors at SaTH with a brief to widen access to human factors training to all areas of the trust and to engage in initiatives to boost the profile of patient safety.
