ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Services

ENT

The ENT Department (also known as Head & Neck or Otolaryngology) provides a full range of ENT clinical services to over half a million people living in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid-Wales. Our state of the art inpatient facilities have been based at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Telford since 2012.

During the Coronavirus pandemic we are encouraging patients to self-manage common ENT conditions where possible to prevent unnecessary contact with health services. For further information please visit here.

The adult Head & Neck Ward (Ward 8) is based on the first floor at PRH and has 14 inpatient beds, including a 2-bedded high-dependency area. Children under 16 years of age are admitted to the Children’s Ward (Ward 19). The PRH site also offers in patient & day surgery theatre facilities, outpatient clinics and audiology facilities. Subspecialist balance, neck lump, voice and thyroid clinics are held here.

The RSH site offers day surgery facilities, as well as outpatient clinics. The unit’s subspecialist voice and head & neck oncology clinics are run on this site.

The ENT department runs additional outpatient clinics in Bridgnorth and Whitchurch. The department will endeavour to offer you an appointment in a local clinic if it is clinically appropriate.

The department runs an active postgraduate programme for all levels of ENT trainees, as well as providing undergraduate teaching to Keele medical students.

Miss Tzortzis is the local Educational Supervisor for ENT Registrars/Core Surgery Trainees, and Mr. Hari/Miss McNamara are the local Educational Supervisors for Foundation and GP Trainees. The ENT department takes an active part in providing regular teaching and assessments for junior doctors.
Mr. Bowyer and Mr. Hari are Honorary Clinical Lecturers at Keele University Medical School and coordinate ENT undergraduate teaching delivered by the department.

The department has an active role in the training of non-medical staff, both in the development of ward nurses and student nurses throughout the Trust. The Head and Neck Specialist Nurses and Physiotherapists provide regular training sessions for tracheostomy and compromised airway care.

There is a regular appraisal process for all trainees within the ENT department.

Individual training for General Practitioners within consultant clinics can be arranged through the department.

We actively respond to requests for education from Primary Care and welcome enquiries from all healthcare workers.
