Procedures or Tests

A PET scan is a test that creates 3 dimensional (3D) pictures of the inside of your body. PET stands for positron emission tomography. The PET scan uses a mildly radioactive drug to show up areas of your body where cells are more active than normal. It’s used to help diagnose some conditions including cancer.

Lymphoma Action | CT and PET/CT scan (lymphoma-action.org.uk)

A CT scan is a non-invasive way of looking inside your body to help diagnose medical conditions and guide treatment. A CT (Computed tomography) scanner uses special x-ray equipment and computers to produce images of multiple ‘slices’ of the body that is scanned. These images of the inside of the body can then be examined on a computer monitor.

An MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan is a method for obtaining highly detailed pictures of the inside of your body. A powerful magnet, radio-waves and a computer are used. The technique does not use x-ray and there are no known side effects, however it is extremely important that certain precautions are followed.

A bone marrow biopsy is a test that involves taking a sample of bone marrow to be examined under a microscope.

The samples are sent to a lab where an expert examines them. They assess the healthy normal bone marrow cells and look for any abnormal cells, such as lymphoma cells. If they need more information about the cells in the sample, they might run additional specialised tests.

Assessment and Monitoring

After your diagnosis, you will be sent a telephone appointment letter for your Holistic Needs Assessment. During this assessment you will be able to discuss any concerns or worries regarding the non-medical aspect of your care, However, if you do have any clinical questions, we will ensure these are forwarded to the appropriate member of your care team. If you need support with benefit referrals or applying for a blue badge, this can be arranged at this appointment. Following your Holistic Needs Assessment appointment, a care plan will be completed by the Navigator and a copy will be sent to your GP and yourself along with any information you have requested during the assessment. All referrals are completed the same day for any services or assistance you have requested during your Holistic Needs Assessment.

If you have any questions or concerns after receiving your appointment or need to change your appointment for your Holistic Needs Assessment, then please call the Navigators Sarah Lane/Clare Fogarty on 01743 261000 ext. 2643/1553

You may receive a diagnosis that requires remote monitoring. This will be carried out via letter through the post with your blood form attached with the date the blood test is required to ensure the department has your results in time for review. You will not have an appointment for this service, the results will be reviewed, and a letter will be sent out advising you if the results are stable or if it is required for you to see a Consultant or an Advanced Practitioner Nurse or Clinical Nurse Specialist.

We also have a remote monitoring questionnaire that needs to be completed by all remote monitoring patients. Please click link below and complete if your letter has advised for you to complete this questionnaire.
